Hi everyone!!  It is the start of a new year which means for a lot of people, new goals.  Most of the goals I make every year pertain to trying to lose weight.  Over the last 3-4 years, I have had a hard time maintaining a weight I am happy with.  Due to bad eating habits and lack of exercising, I put on about 25 pounds.  I tried different ways to lose weight but it wasn’t coming off.  One of my friends suggested using the My Fitness Pal app.  So I thought I’d give it a try.  Keep reading, Lose Weight with my Fitness Pal to learn more.

From February 2015 through September 2015 I lost about 15 pounds using My Fitness Pal app.  It has been the only weight loss solution that has worked for me.  Unfortunately, I put the weight back on because I stopped keeping track of what I was eating and didn’t exercise.  Since the beginning of year 2016 I have been using the app again and hope to lose the weight.

Reasons I love using My Fitness Pal to help me lose weight

  • Tracking gets easier the longer you use the app.
  • Use the Recipe Tool to save recipes from anywhere on the internet without having to manually add each ingredient.
  • My Fitness Pal has the largest database with over 6 million foods and more being added every day.
  • Set reminders so you don’t forget to log your meals.  Choose when and My Fitness Pal will send reminders to log your meals.
  • Save your favorite meals so when you eat the same foods they are available with one click.
  • Use the restaurant logging to search for the restaurant you are at and see the nutrition information for the items on the menu.
  • Connect My Fitness Pal with other health apps.
  • There is a My Fitness Pal Blog where you can find articles about healthy eating and living.
  • Connect with other people on their community forum.  Ask questions or use it to stay motivated.

Download the app or go to My Fitness Pal app to sign up for a free account.  There is also the option to go premium which offers upgrades that you wouldn’t get with the free account.

Next, tell a little about yourself.  The information you provide will help determine how many calories you will need for the day.

Add your friends to My Fitness Pal.  You can control what your friends can see as far as your weight loss and entries.  When you add friends, you will have the extra support and motivation to help with your weight loss journey.  After you use the My Fitness Pal and start to lose weight, your calorie goals will also change, so you will want to update your new weight in the system.  I like to weigh myself weekly every Saturday morning first thing before I eat.

To log your food, type in what you eat or use the bar-code scanner.

When you exercise you can get those calories back depending how long you perform each exercise.  I love this because when I exercise, I don’t feel as guilty if I eat a treat that day.

Sometimes the food you enter will not show up.  If you can’t find the exact match, pick something close instead.  When you are done entering food for the day, click on the Complete Diary Button.  This will show you information from the choices you made and tell you where you will be in the weeks to come if you continue with the same entries.

As a result, the more you track your food and exercise the closer you will be to achieving your goals.  You will learn how to make healthy choices and start to see your food choice patterns.  When I started using My Fitness Pal, I was shocked by the amount of food I was eating.  I had to really pick and choose what I was going to eat for the day since in the past I was eating whatever and whenever I wanted.  After using this app, I realized why I gained so much weight in the last few years.  It is a great way to keep track of your food consumption and get you where you want to be.
