This week, I will be going over the 52 Week Dairy Free Challenges Summary. These are the substitutes that can be used in place of dairy from the challenges completed over the last few weeks. Since there are so many different dairy-free options, it shouldn’t be difficult to find substitutes and in addition, it will be exciting to try new foods.

52 WEEK DAIRY FREE CHALLENGES SUMMARY
Dairy Free Butter Substitutes For Cooking, Baking and Spreading
Avocado – Use equal pureed avocado for the amount of butter called for when baking- You can also use on either bread or crackers
Mashed Bananas – Add bananas slowly until you get the consistency you want when baking or cooking
Hummus – Good choice for either spreading or dipping
Olive Oil – When baking use 3/4 cup of olive oil for every cup of butter
Applesauce – Use equal amount of applesauce for the amount of butter
Nut Butter (Peanut or almond butter) – Spread on breads or bagels
Pumpkin Pure – For every cup of butter use 3/4 cup of pumpkin puree
Dairy Free Mayonnaise Substitutes For Salads and Sandwiches
Olive Oil – Use in salads
Hummus – Can be used with either sandwiches or salads
Mustard – I like using mustard on my sandwiches because of the low calories
Avocado – Can be used on sandwiches
Pesto – Use pesto on sandwiches or salads
When substituting you will want to keep in mind the flavor and consistency will change. Change it up when making meals and see what option works the best for you.
Dairy Free Cheese Substitutes
Use Mozza Shreds either in blocks or slices for:
- Pizzas
- Stromboli’s
- Baked pasta dishes
Teese Cheddar Vegan Cheese
Use Teese Cheddar Cheese on sandwiches such as paninis or a grilled cheese. Is you mouth watering yet?

Substituting yogurt for other non-dairy foods
Make your own
You can make dairy free, vegan yogurt at home using dairy free milk. On Amazon purchase the Vegan Starter & Euro Cuisine YM80 Maker. For a simple way of making dairy free yogurt you can buy Eugurt Dairy-Free Powder and Starter (Coconut, 2 Pack) on Amazon, just add water and sugar.
Other Dairy free options
Use Thai Kitchen Organic Coconut Milk not only for yogurt substitutes but also in your coffee for cream, oatmeal, baking and smoothies.
For baking
If you are looking for a moist substitute when baking use applesauce. When making baked foods like muffins and the recipe calls for yogurt use buttermilk. To make buttermilk, add a tablespoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of dairy free milk
Dairy Free Milk Substitutes
- Soy Milk – Use soy milk in either cereal, coffee and smoothies, pancakes or waffles
- Rice Milk – In addition to this milk being free of soy, gluten and nuts, it can be used in either cream soups or sauces – Flavors are plain, vanilla and chocolate
- Almond Milk – Use with coffee, oatmeal or smoothies
- Coconut Milk – Good for baking because of the flavor
- Hemp Milk – Good alternative for those allergic to soy, nuts or gluten
- Flax Milk – Unsweetened brands are good to bake with and the Original Flax milk is good in hot cocoa, coffee or tea
- Oat Milk – Use oat milk in either cereal, smoothies or baked goods. Also can be use with mashed potatoes or soups
- Potato Milk – Commonly sold in powdered form
Dairy Free Ice Cream Substitutes
Use over ripe Bananas to make ice cream
Peel and cut bananas that are brown and over ripe. Put them in a bag and freeze them for about 1 day. After they are frozen you can blend or mash them up. Add fruit or syrups for extra flavoring and enjoy!!
