HOW TO RELAX BEFORE BED

How to Relax Before Bed

1. Unwind After Work

Sometimes, it’s easy to blur the lines between work and day-to-day life.  This is bad because, if you’re unable to turn off “work-mode,” then your mind is going to remain alert when it should be relaxing and preparing for slumber.

To help yourself unwind after a long day at work, you may want to establish a clear time signaling the end of your workday.  Once you’ve reached that time, don’t allow yourself to check your work email or work on any projects after hours.  After you’ve trained yourself to follow this schedule, it will help your mind calm down before you hit the hay.

2. Create a Nightly Routine

Approximately 1-2 hours before bed, it’s important to empty your mind.  The last thing you want is for your thoughts to be racing as you lie in bed trying to get to sleep.  In order to calm your mind, some helpful activities include:

  • Meditating: Meditating for even 5 minutes before bedtime can help you keep your mind in a peaceful state.  This will make it easier for you to drift to sleep.
  • Taking a Warm Bath: Nothing screams “relaxation” like a soothing bath.  You may even want to accompany your bath session with a warm cup of noncaffeinated herbal tea.
  • Journaling: Sometimes it can feel impossible to get your mind to quiet down about the busy workday or other stressors in your life.  In situations such as these, journaling is a great way to express your thoughts and let go of anxiety.

3. Avoid Screens Before Bedtime

It’s no secret that the blue light from smartphones and televisions has a negative impact on our quality of sleep.  That said, for an hour before bedtime, it’s best to avoid bright screens altogether.  If you’re having trouble finding something to do with the last hour of your day, you may want to establish a habit of reading before you go to sleep.

Conclusion

These days, we are surrounded by stimulating distractions.  Whether it be the TV, your laptop, your work or video games, there is an endless amount of activities that keep your mind racing and unable to calm down before bed.  This is why it’s of the utmost importance to make relaxation at the end of the day a priority.  For more information on relaxing before bed, the folks at Tommy John have provided the infographic below.
