Having children in the house, especially toddlers, means baby proofing the entire house to keep them safe.  Small children love to explore and are always curious about everything around them. They either love to put everything in their mouth, fidget with it or poke things around.  Hence, we must make sure that they do not hurt themselves.  One thing to keep your children safe from is electricity which can also lead to some serious troubles.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE FROM ELECTRICAL ACCIDENTS

ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS

In this article, we will guide you on how to make sure that your children are safe from any electrical accidents.

Install Plug Protectors

We have plug points and outlets across various places.  Some are out of reach for children and some are not.  The ones that are high up where your child cannot reach is something you don’t need to worry about, however, the power outlets within the reach of your child need to be covered.  You can either call an electrician to install power outlets which cover so that your child cannot open or you can get plug protectors from a local store and plug them in the power outlets.

No Hanging Wires

There are a number of appliances and gadgets in our home that we plug into power outlets.  You need to ensure that your child cannot grab any of the wires from these appliances or gadgets.  As they say, curiosity never killed a cat but it did hurt the cat and the same could happen to your child.  They may simply grab the wire and pull it towards them.  This can cause the appliance to fall on your child and hurt them severely.  You can ask the electrician to make provision for hanging wires to keep them away from the reach of children.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS

Discard Any Damaged Wires

Any wires or cords that have damage or cracks or if the wire gets exposed, please throw them away.  If your child comes into contact with a cord or wire that has damage, they may get seriously electrocuted or burnt if they put the wire in their mouth or touch the opening with bare hands.  Call an electrician to either fix the cord or replace the entire wire.

Swimming Pool Safety

Many homeowners have beautiful swimming pools in their back yard.  Water and electricity is a very bad combination that can lead to immediate death.  For everyone’s safety, make sure all power outlets, wiring and also any lights near and around the pool area are completely concealed.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS

Do Not Leave Unwanted Appliances Plugged In

Apart from the refrigerator, unplug appliances and gadgets not in use and also make sure that all the switches are off because the appliances that don’t require constant electrical supply may explode.  Hence, before going to bed every night check if all the switches are off and no appliance or gadget is plugged in.

Conclusion

The above-mentioned steps will not only keep your child safe but will also ensure that every other member of the family is safe and sound.  Have an electrician conduct regular inspection of the entire electrical system of the house to ensure that you do not face any grave situation.  Also, have an emergency electrician’s number on your speed dial, you never know when you may need them.
