DIY HERB OR FLOWER GARDEN

Hi everyone!!  I love the thought of having a garden to grow my own herbs, fruits, vegetables or flowers.  To be able to walk into the backyard and gather home grown ingredients instead of running to the store.  When my husband and I bought the house we are in, we didn’t think this was going to be a possibility since our backyard is so tiny.  After doing some research though, we found this awesome DIY herb or flower garden project so we can still have a garden but not needing a large yard.

My husband made our DIY herb or flower garden which cost next to nothing!!  In case others have no room in their back yard, this is a great DIY project to build if you want your own garden.

To start this project you will need:

  • Nails or screws
  • Pry Bar
  • 2 skids (We got the skids for free where my husband works.  Ask around to see if this is an option for you to save money on wood.)
  • Finish of your choice (Paint or Stain)
  • Fasteners (Hammer or Powered Drill Driver)

Start with two skids that are the same size.  Choose the size based on the area you have to place the planter shelf in.  Another way is to choose the size by the amount of pots that will be used to fit into the planter shelf.

Remove the top deck boards and keep for use later.

Remove the top set of stringers that hold the deck boards in place with the spacer blocks.  When done, there should be three sets of stringers with spacer blocks only.  Save the stringers to use later.

On the second skid, remove the bottom stringers only leaving the rest of the skid intact.  Again, save the wood for later as needed.

Using the stringers that were removed from the bottom, attach them to the side across all three spacer blocks to make half the shelf.  You should now have two closed sides and two open sides for the spacer blocks.  Do the same with the spacer blocks that are still attached to the other skid so you have two halves of a shelf.

Rotate the three shelve halves to match the same direction as the shelf attached to the skid.  Secure them to the skid using screws from the side.  Watch for splitting to make sure they will hold up to the weight of the planters when full and after watering.

Apply the paint or stain finish when the garden planter is put together.  We used a gray stain to match the trim of our house.

Once the garden planter is dry, you are ready to put it to use.  We were able to attach it to the fence near our back door to the kitchen.  This way when cooking, the herbs are easily accessible.

USE EXTRA SPARE DECK BOARDS FOR SEVERAL PURPOSES:

  • Spacers if you want more depth for the size planter you are using.  Cut the spacers the same size as the blocks.  Sandwich the spacers between the two shelf halves to get the desired depth.
  • Create a support on the back or as feet to make this shelf free standing and portable to place anywhere that is level.
  • Spacers for the mounting to an area like the fence that does not have a surface setup to support the garden shelf flat.
  • Another project such as the light holders that my husband made for solar yard lights!

So there you have it, your very own DIY herb or flower garden!!  This DIY herb or flower garden project is super cute and doesn’t cost a lot to make.  It is a great option if you don’t have a lot of space but still want a small garden.
