The work from home environment required many of us to turn our homes into our workspaces.  Creating a home office is more popular now than ever, but you may not have a room available to dedicate to a personal office.  Working in the kitchen, bedroom or living room can be distracting if you’re living with others as well.  One recent office option that has become increasingly popular is the backyard office.

But first and foremost, we should define what constitutes a backyard office: it’s often referred to as a separate structure – typically involving a pod, garage, shed or even a pool house – that is fashioned to be a work-from-home office.  There are countless advantages to having your office outside the confines of your home, especially the short commute!  It also helps you separate home life from work life as the two have meshed together in the past year.

If exploring and eventually creating your own backyard office is of interest to you, this article details how to design the perfect backyard office shed with the ideal decor inspired by mood boards.

Step 1: Plan Ahead

Your backyard office construction will ultimately depend on whether you’re converting it from an old outbuilding, a shed or building the structure from scratch.  Depending on where you’re starting from, the following design tips aim to aid you in creating a comfortable yet productive backyard office.  Planning ahead with a thorough game plan will ensure that your office comes together smoothly.

It’s important to make sure that structure you’re building or using has enough space for every item you plan to place in it as well as the activities you intend to use your office for.  In addition to space, other factors to consider include Wi-Fi and electricity for your office essentials.  For a comfortable work environment, consider installing an air conditioner or fans if you live in hot weather; conversely, if you live in a colder climate, investing in heating or a space heater will ensure your comfort later down the line.

When working outside, another important thing to consider is the noise levels in your environment.  Do you live with noisy neighbors, or next to a busy street?  Take this into account when soundproofing your space or add speakers to play your own music while you work.

Once the fundamentals of your office are taken care of, you’re reading to jump into designing.

Step 2: Bring on the Blueprint

Channel your inner designer by creating a floor plan: this is where a tape measure will come in handy.  Make sure you measure your space and the furniture that you want to place in your office to make sure that everything fits in advance!  Too many large furniture items will make your office seem cramped.

In your blueprint floor plan, include lighting and place your furniture in a way that doesn’t obstruct the outlets in your space.  Although this may seem tedious, it will help you in the long run!

When it comes to interior design, you may not be a professional – and that’s okay!  We’ve found some great interior design apps you can use right from your own phone.

Step 3: Decorate Your Workspace

Here comes the fun part: decorating your backyard office!  Before you start decorating your workspace, be sure to pick an aesthetic or theme you want to stick to.  Pick a furniture style that works for you, whether that be traditional antiques or clean, modern pieces.  Take a look through some current design trends to keep up with what folks are doing now.

Traditional office designs usually incorporate rich colors, patterns and intricate details, while modern office aesthetics use clean lines, open spaces and neutral color palettes.

Make sure to utilize lighting when designing your workspace.  Pendant light fixtures are great if you prefer lighting that comes from your ceiling, but floor lamps are also a great option for decorative lighting.  If you prefer to keep your lighting close to your workspace, a table or desk lamp can shed light directly on your workspace.

If you want more detailed and thorough design ideas, take a look at these mood boards showcasing an artist’s studio, scholarly study, minimalist escape or a nature-inspired office.

We hope this 3-step guide provided an inspirational beginning to your backyard office journey.  Although it may not seem like much at first, renovators and home designers at all levels know that it’s not about the space itself, but what you make of it.
