We have another awesome guest post to share with you this week, Deciding If A Bathroom Remodel Is Right For You, by Erica Garland from Modern Bathroom. Thank you for providing this great article for us Erica!! We really enjoyed it and appreciate the time you took for us!!

Your bathroom feels like it came out of 1983 and the ventilation fan sounds like a helicopter about to lose a blade. Is it time to remodel? Maybe your bathroom vanity is cluttered because there isn’t enough storage space to stash things in. Perhaps your teenager likes to take super long showers and the water bill is driving you nuts. Or maybe you’ve injured your knee and really need a place to sit in the shower. Is now the time to remodel? One of the most sought-after home improvement projects is the bathroom remodel for those potential reasons and so many others. If you’re teetering on the edge of a decision about remodeling your bathroom, consider your answers to the following questions to help you decide whether now is the time or if you should wait a little longer.

1.  What Aspects of Your Bathroom Do You Love the Most?

Even if you find many aspects of your bathroom unsatisfactory, examine your daily bathroom routines and think about things that really work for you. The towel rod placement is exactly perfect. Maybe the lighting perfectly removes shadows, so you can see to shave or apply makeup. Maybe you love the tile color in the shower. Write down all the things you really love about your bathroom, because even if you do decide to remodel, you’ll want to keep or enhance the things you find useful, beautiful and convenient.

2.  What Aspects of Your Bathroom Bother You Most?

If the thought of bathroom remodeling has been nipping at you for a while, you probably already have a running list. Not enough storage space? Dated decor? Inconvenient shower or toilet? Dripping faucets? Poor ventilation? Water damage or mold? Go through your daily bathroom routines again and think about all the times you wish something was different. Compare that with the previous list of things you love about your bathroom. Now prioritize and evaluate which list carries the most weight. If there are real functional and safety problems, remodeling could end up saving you money and problems in the long run.

3.  How Easy Is it to Clean and Maintain Your Bathroom?

You may already have this on one of your lists. Are countertops permanently stained? How much “fun” is it to clean the grout between the shower tiles on a regular basis? Are there any chipped or cracked floor tiles where hidden mold might be growing? Not that cleaning the bathroom is anyone’s favorite chore, but if it’s something you dread with a passion, newer materials and simpler designs could make bathroom cleaning a lot easier.

4.  Do You Have Any Safety Concerns About Your Bathroom?

Weigh the answer to this question more heavily than any other. In wet places, even healthy, young people could slip and fall if they step wrong. Children and water require extreme care, and if you have elderly loved ones using the bathroom, making sure they’re safe is another concern. Then there’s electricity in damp areas. If your bathroom has outdated wiring, this creates some extreme hazards. Mold and mildew can cause other health and safety concerns as well.

5.  What Do Your Family Members Need From a Bathroom Now and in the Future?

If you’re thinking about a bathroom remodel, consider what your family’s needs will be over the course of the next 5 to 10 years. Are there little children? Athletes with injuries? Elderly grandparents? Planning ahead can help you determine what features should go into your bathroom remodel. Elderly members of the family would probably appreciate grab bars, elevated toilet seats, a comfortable place to sit in the shower or maybe even a walk-in tub with a seat. If you have little children, consider built-in safety features to protect them too.

6.  How Do You Feel About the Storage Space in Your Bathroom?

“We have enough storage space in the bathroom,” said nobody ever. But go deeper than that. What kind of storage are you missing there? Do you need more heated towel racks? A larger linen closet? More organized vanity drawers? A recessed medicine cabinet? Consider what isn’t working now in your bathroom storage situation to discover what you really need to optimize your space.

7.  Are There Any Functional, “Behind the Scenes” Problems in the Bathroom?

Along with the safety considerations, these “behind the scenes” bathroom remodeling issues are extremely important. If the plumbing is leaking somewhere, your drains are constantly stopped or there is poor ventilation, mold, water damage or faulty electrical wiring to your outlets or switches, factor these heavily into your decision to remodel the bathroom. All of these things affect your health and safety, as well as the structural integrity and basic functionality of your bathroom.

8.  What’s Your Bathroom Remodeling Budget?

Based on your answers above, you may find that you really do need to have some aspects of your bathroom upgraded now, but budget concerns may delay more stylistic updates. At the same time, high-impact, relatively low-cost bathroom updates may perk up the vibe without breaking the bank.

How does your list look now? Taking an organized, prioritized and thorough look at your current bathroom situation while looking to the future can help you decide on the timing and necessity for a bathroom remodeling project. It can also help you reduce the number of surprises that may crop up during the remodeling project.
