Runners spend a lot of attention and time selecting the right footwear.  Running is a high-impact activity, and wearing athletic socks can prevent blisters and other forms of discomfort due to friction or lack of cushioning.  Here are five reasons to put on a pair of running socks or custom socks designed for athletic wear.

Socks Prevent Blisters

Socks play an important part in controlling the factors that contribute toward the development of blisters during running.  If any part on the interior of a pair of running shoes is prone to rub, shoes can provide the cushioning necessary to prevent blisters from forming on feet during runs.

Moisture-wicking sock materials such as 100% nylon stretch yarn or a blend of materials such as polypropylene, nylon, elastic and spandex cushion feet from rubbing due to shoes as well as repeated impact.  For the ultimate blister protection, look for socks that feature ProDRI technology.

Running Socks Provide Cushioning

The right socks can greatly increase runners’ comfort with a combination of combination of compression and cushioning.  Ergonomic cushioning on the soles of socks, particularly at the heel and toe, can be felt inside of shoes on every stride in a run.  Compressing the foot at the arch and ankle also provides support.

It is important to properly maintain running socks to sustain levels of cushioning over repeated wear.  Most athletic socks should be turned inside out, machine washed without bleach and laid flat to air dry or be dried on low heat.  Cleaning socks inside out can keep fabric from developing unsightly fuzz or pulling.  Check the care instructions for each pair of running socks.

Custom Socks Are Stylish

Socks with customized colors, logos, text or printed images are likely to stand out.  Socks of quarter-, crew- or knee-length are more visible to observers than short ankle-length socks.  The options that are available for customizing socks depends on the base design and the length you select.

Many runners prefer short socks, and can appreciate the design of these socks when lacing up shoes for a run.  The top of ankle-height socks may be visible over the collar or top of running shoes. Longer socks may be preferable to wear while running in cooler weather.  The higher portion of socks may provide additional compression on a runner’s calves, but should not otherwise interfere with running.

Athletic Socks Are Antimicrobial

Many styles of athletic socks contain antimicrobial material. Bacteria growth in running socks and shoes leads to undesirable odors.  Bacteria on untreated socks grow exponentially during wear, whereas treated socks may develop up to 99.9% less bacteria during similar wear.

Antimicrobial treatments cannot be felt, seen or smelled on socks.  ProDRI and other antimicrobial sock treatments work together with moisture wicking materials.  Bacteria and fungus thrive in damp conditions, and these socks minimize all of the factors that support growth. Runners should make sure that any socks purchased for this activity are antimicrobial and fast drying.

Socks Preserve Running Shoes

Socks with ProDRI technology and cushioning can help to preserve the condition of the insoles and interior of running shoes.  Shoes are less likely to develop odors after repeated wear if a runner puts on a clean pair of socks before every excursion and allows shoes to air out afterward.

These are five important reasons why every runner should wear socks.  Whether you run for fitness or participate in races, you can appreciate the look and feel of a pair of custom socks.  If you choose to design socks for running, you may prefer to choose a length from ankle-height all the way up to the knee based on the season.
